That is correct. Many businesses still use these methods because they were taught that these are just “the rules.” But the truth is, they will hurt your company more than help it. And if you find yourself practicing any of these five old-school management techniques, you need to stop immediately!

1) The top-down approach: 

Most managers had some form of this type of training while they were still in college. The idea is that the boss tells their employees what to do and how they are doing their work. This is very ineffective because there are always things that you cannot know unless you are on the ground floor looking up at the big picture every day.

2) Lack of communication: 

Not having open communication within a company will certainly cause problems. Employees who don’t know what’s going on around them will not adapt to anything new, and they won’t understand why something is happening. And if this feeling of confusion takes over enough employees, your business could fail due to a lack of teamwork, which brings me to my next point.

3) Focusing more on individual accomplishments: 

Yes, you want employees to recognize and be proud of their individual accomplishments. However, focusing too much on these individual accomplishments will cause the whole company to fail. For a company to succeed, everyone has to work together towards this one goal.

4) A lack of encouragement: 

Encourage your employees! If people feel appreciated, they will stay longer at your business and want to accomplish more for themselves and others within your company. A lack of encouragement can lead quickly to a loss of productivity.

5) A lack of motivation: 

As a boss or manager, it’s easy to say, “Well, I did it this way for years,” and to continue with doing things the same way you’ve always done them. But if you want your business to succeed in today’s global market, you will need to stay up-to-date with new trends. New ideas can help motivate your employees, so they feel like their work is making a difference. When people feel like they are making a difference, they are motivated by that feeling.

These old school management practices may have worked back then, but they won’t fly in today’s workforce!
